I’ve been selling books for over a decade and I’ve learned that there are some simple things you can do to make your sale as easy as possible. This blog will teach you how to sell old books, where to list them, and what type of books you should be trying to find. From children’s literature and rare first editions to out-of-print textbooks and novels from the 70s, we’ll help you get rid of those pesky book piles in your home! This is an article about what types of books to sell and where they’re worth listing it.
What to Sell
1) First, find out what books are in demand on sites like Amazon or eBay. Our site has a list of the 10 most profitable books to sell.
2) Emphasize books that are both old and obscure. These can be sold at a higher price point because they have less competition from other sellers.
3) Avoid selling common books from authors such as Albert Camus or Jane Austen as all of those copies will be too easy to find online.
4) Make your book stand out by having it signed and/or inscribed with a message. The value of a signed book can be up to 50% higher than the same copy unsigned.
5) If you don’t want to sell or ship your books, look for local buyers instead. Craigslist is an excellent place to find people directly interested in buying your books.
6) You can get $150-$300 for textbooks that are only 6 months old, especially if you haven’t opened them.
7) For maximum profitability, look for books published outside of the United States as they aren’t reprinted nearly as often and therefore can fetch a higher price point.
Where to List Them
Another important factor in determining where to list books is what you’re willing to pay for the listing. Listing fees for online sellers vary greatly and can be as low as $0-$20 per month, while some sites may charge more than $100 per listing.
For example, on Ebay, sellers can choose from 3 different listing options: Basic, which is free; 2-day shipping, which costs $1.25; and 1-day shipping, which costs $2.49.
If you’re not sure how many books you want to list at a time and stress the importance of instant gratification when it comes to receiving your money, we recommend Basic listings or paying for 2-day shipping so that your product will be listed for at least 3-4 weeks.
On the other hand, if you’re able to wait 2-5 weeks before receiving your money you’ll be better off paying $0-$30 per month for an eBay Store. This will give you unlimited listings and free shipping of your books (the only costs are eBay’s insertion fees of 10%).
More Ways to Sell
There are plenty of other ways to sell books besides through online marketplaces. Craigslist is the most popular option, but don’t forget there are many local buyers who would love to take your books off your hands if you know where to find them.
If you have a lot of books or are looking for maximum profits, we highly recommend selling them in bulk. Sites like Amazon and Book Finder allow you to sell books on consignment – meaning they send you a prepaid shipping label so that you can mail your books to them directly and they’ll take care of the rest.
These companies let you set your own price, take a percentage from each sale, and allow you to receive payment as soon as they sell your books. We recommend using these services if you have more than 50-100 books to sell, as it will be too time consuming and costly to mail every book by itself.
Finally, if you don’t want to deal with the hassle of trying to find a buyer or even taking pictures of your book, consider using an online book sale website to simply list your books for you. These sites charge you a small fee (usually around $0-$15 per month) and will post them all in one place without any work on your part. While the value of the books is often lower than other websites, it can be an easy way to clear out your shelves in one fell swoop.
Why Selling Your Used Books Can Be Profitable
Most people wouldn’t think twice about the value of an old book, especially if it’s something they picked up at a garage sale or thrift store for $0-$5. While we agree that you shouldn’t go around selling everything you own because you never know when the prices might increase, we do think it’s worth doing a little research before giving away or recycling your books.
The truth is that while you may only get $5-$10 for a book at Goodwill, there are definitely exceptions and markets where you can make much more.
If you’re interested in making money from your old books, the biggest factor is to make sure they’re in good condition. If you can get past any torn or missing pages (which happens quite often), then it’s just a matter of looking up the value of your book on one of the many websites dedicated to buying and selling books.
One thing to keep in mind is that while stores like Goodwill and Half Price Books will make you an offer based on the condition of your books, online sites automatically increase this value to help offset their costs. While we’re not saying that they’re completely ripping you off – as there’s a lot of work involved in buying and selling books – it does mean that if something is listed as ‘Good’ on their website it’s probably worth more than you think.
Books listed as ‘Good’ can be sold for $1-$5 more than the average prices on Amazon and eBay
eBay : A quick search on eBay shows that you can sell used textbooks starting at $8.71 , which is significantly higher than the price of new textbooks ($20-$40) at places like Barnes and Noble.
Books listed on eBay can be sold for significantly higher prices than other websites
Amazon : If you ever need to sell a book that is less than $5, then Amazon is likely the best option. That’s because their fee of $3 per item will take up 50% of your sale – meaning you’ll still get to keep half of what the buyer pays.
Books listed on Amazon are typically sold for higher prices, but with lower commissions
Other Used Book Marketplaces : You can also use sites like Booksprice or Alibris to find the value of your old books. While these websites are mostly used by book dealers who are looking to make a profit, they will also list books for sale – which means you can find the value of your old book online.
Books priced on websites like Alibris can be sold for higher prices than average, though it may take more effort to find buyers.
Selling your old books can be a great way to make some extra money, but it’s important to know where you should list them in order to get the best price. If you have less than 50-100 books that are still in good condition, then sites like Half Price Books or Goodwill will likely offer an appropriate value for your work – just don’t forget about all of the used book marketplaces out there! For anything more substantial (over 100 books), we recommend using one of these online solutions instead. They’ll take care of all of the marketing and selling while ensuring that every penny goes into your pocket. Which site do you prefer?
